A chipped tooth can be quite alarming, but don’t panic! Although your enamel is the hardest substance in your body, it isn’t indestructible. Unfortunately, it won’t grow back, either. No matter how the break happened, you could be at risk of losing your tooth with no treatment, even if the damage appears minor. Here are 3 steps to take if you chipped a tooth and how your emergency dentist can fix it.
1. Provide First Aid At Home
Rinse your mouth with salt water to remove any debris. It will also kill any bacteria and reduce swelling and pain. Assess the situation to see the extent of the damage. If there’s any bleeding, bite on a gauze pad for about 20 minutes or until it’s controlled. You can also apply a cold compress if there’s any swelling.
2. Contact Your Emergency Dentist Right Away
Contact your dentist right away and explain the situation. If the chip is minor, and you aren’t in any pain, you can often wait a day or two before seeing your dentist. However, if the damage is severe, or you’re in a lot of pain, you need to see an emergency dentist right away.
Your tooth will be vulnerable to bacteria and fractures if it isn’t repaired. Delaying treatment for too long can cause a small issue to turn into a big problem that may put you at risk of losing your tooth, like an infection.
3. Manage Any Discomfort
Avoid chewing with the damaged tooth and eat soft foods to minimize pain. Avoid any hot or cold food and drinks to prevent sensitivity. Take an OTC pain reliever to manage any pain and apply a cold compress to numb the area. Sleep with your pillow elevated to prevent blood from pooling in your head, which can cause a throbbing toothache.
Treatments for a Chipped Tooth
There are many options to fix a chipped tooth, depending on your situation. Your dentist will examine your mouth and determine which procedure is right for you, like:
- Dental Bonding: A composite resin is shaded to the color of your enamel to fix the chip while looking like part of your natural tooth.
- Porcelain Veneers: A veneer is applied to the front surface of a tooth to improve its color, size, and shape. It can also be used to treat chips, cracks, and many other issues.
- Dental Crown: A crown is recommended for significant breaks. It covers the entire surface of a tooth above the gum line. It’s made from all ceramic material to look natural while providing your tooth with an added layer of protection.
Your dentist will create an individualized solution to restore your smile to its beautiful state.
