How Does Icon Work?
White spot lesions (WSLs) happen because of an imbalance of remineralization and demineralization. Usually, this means that some portions of the enamel have more minerals than others, leading to uneven coloration. The white spots on the teeth indicate that minerals are unable to reach deeper parts of the enamel. Their white color comes from the way light scatters off of them.
Dr. Curcio offers Icon treatment to correct this type of discoloration. It infiltrates the enamel and fills in lesions with tooth-colored resin. Here’s a general idea of what the process looks like:
- Using micro-abrasion, Dr. Curcio will expose the tubules inside the tooth. She’ll then apply an etching material to prepare the tooth to bond with the resin that will correct its color.
- While keeping your teeth dry, Dr. Curcio will apply the resin. It penetrates the lesions and soaks into your smile, forming a bond with your dentition.
- Any excess resin is removed, and a special light hardens the resin that’s still inside the tooth.
- Curcio will polish the tooth to complete your look.
